2019 Organ Scholarship

Glasgow Cathedral are advertising for an organ scholar to commence in Summer 2019. This new scholarship, established in memory of the late former minister of Glasgow Cathedral, The Rev’d Dr Laurence A B Whitley, will offer a unique opportunity for an aspiring organist to work closely with the Cathedral’s professional choir, and to play for a variety of services.

  • We seek applicants who demonstrate an active interest in organ and choral music, and are keen to enhance their skills in these areas.
  • Applicants need not be in a current course of study, although ongoing organ tuition is desirable.
  • Primary duties are playing for 3 Sunday services (morning and/or evensong) each calendar month (exact services decided by rota).
  • The post is initially offered for a fixed term of 12 months.
  • The successful candidate will receive a £3,000 bursary (paid in monthly instalments) along with access to Glasgow Cathedral to practise. Any additional services would be remunerated at the Cathedral’s deputy rates.
  • Applicants should be competent organists, capable of accompanying standard sacred choral repertoire.
  • There is no midweek commitment associated with this position.
